About the company

Our client is a law firm.

The role

Raydar is recruiting for this role on behalf of our client. Own a docket of civil defense matters from the opening pleadings through trial, with a high degree of independence. The work blends written advocacy, witness examination and courtroom appearances, with real chances to participate in trials. Openings are available at both senior and junior levels.

What you'll do

  • Steer each matter through its whole life, from early pleadings and scheduling orders to discovery, motion practice, trial preparation and trial.
  • Draft and answer written discovery requests.
  • Prepare and argue motions before the court.
  • Examine and prepare witnesses at deposition, including subject-matter experts.
  • Visit sites and travel around California for hearings and depositions.
  • Act as lead or supporting trial counsel in the courtroom.
  • Liaise with claims professionals, outside experts and clients while exercising sound independent judgment.
  • Partner with legal support staff in a relaxed, collegial office.

What we're looking for

  • A Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • A current California bar license in good standing.
  • Background in insurance defense litigation: at least 5 years for the senior role, or 1 to 3 years since admission with some insurance defense exposure and a genuine wish to specialize for the junior role.
  • Comfort carrying a caseload of about 30 to 40 open matters with minimal oversight.
  • Hands-on skill preparing case management orders, appearing in court and overseeing written discovery such as interrogatories and requests for production and admission.
  • Practical deposition skills on both sides of the table, including with expert witnesses.
  • Strong legal research, analytical writing and communication skills.
  • A collaborative working style that fits a casual, mid-size firm.
  • Willingness to commute to the assigned office each day and to travel within California.
  • A resume that shows your full name and complete work history.

Bonus points

  • Background defending catastrophic personal injury claims.
  • Trial experience as lead or supporting counsel, or a keen drive to gain it.
  • A history of seeing cases through to verdict.

Location and work model

  • San Diego, Irvine or Riverside, California, United States
  • On-site, daily in-office presence at the assigned office, no remote or hybrid option
  • Full-time

Compensation, as the posting describes it

  • Performance-based billable hours bonus
