Disney has created a company-wide technology role and hired a leader with experience across consumer AI, enterprise software, advertising, and cloud infrastructure.
On September 18, The Walt Disney Company announced that Karandeep Anand will join as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, effective October 2. Disney described the role as newly created. Anand will report to CEO Josh D'Amaro and oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product, and engineering across Disney's segment technology teams.
Anand most recently led Character.AI. Disney also said that a number of Character.AI technical team members are expected to join the company. Before Character.AI, he was President and Chief Product Officer at Brex, held product leadership roles at Meta, and spent 15 years at Microsoft, including work on Azure.
The team move matters
The title is interesting, but the reporting line and scope matter more. Disney is giving one executive responsibility across infrastructure, data, AI, product, and engineering while asking him to work across existing segment teams. That creates a clear question for anyone considering a role there: where does company-wide authority end and segment authority begin?
The expected movement of technical staff from Character.AI is also worth watching. A leader arriving with colleagues who already know how to work together may move faster than an executive building every relationship from scratch. It does not tell us how many people will move, which functions they cover, or what Disney will build.
For candidates, I would ask which systems the new organization will own, which decisions remain inside Disney's business segments, and how success will be measured during the first year. A big title can hide a coordination job. Disney's announcement suggests this one also carries direct operating responsibility.
